Whites Blown Away By Double Gayle Force

Unstoppable Magpies Make It 9 On The Trot

Newcastle put on a professional and accomplished display in front of the Sky cameras and a packed Elland Road on Sunday to record a 2-0 victory which was their 9th in a row in all competitions and a win that sees us stengthen our position at the top of the Championship.

I have to say I was a bit worried about this one going into it and was expecting it to be a bit of a tougher game. You never quite know what kind of performance you will get after an international break, Leeds were on a good run and on top of this I think you just always have that feeling when you are on a long winning run that it has to end at some point.

However we got out of the traps quickly and quite simply over the 90 minutes I think we just had far too much quality all over the pitch for Leeds.

They may point to a decent penalty claim at 1-0 and also point to the fact that our first goal was handed to us on a plate following a Rob Green clanger but I think if they look at that 90 minutes and are honest with themselves then I think it is pretty clear that we won that game pretty easily without really needing to get out of 2nd gear.

Gary Monk made a lot of the penalty claim for handball against Jack Colback but for me the referee got it spot on.

Yes of course Leeds fans will probably argue that I am bound to say that - I certainly wouldnt argue that it was one of those that you have definitely seen given and had it been down the other end then I would have initially probably been calling for a penalty too but neither of those things mean it is actually a penalty.

I think if you look at it again as a neutral and apply the laws of the game there are 2 key points - 1. I dont think Colbacks arms are deliberately put out nor are they in an unnatural position, he is jumping so your arms automatically raise up and 2. I think the most important thing is proximity. They were that close it would have been impossible for him to get out of the way and I think that is why the ref didnt give it.

Yes it was at quite a crucial time in the game but even if it had been given and scored I dont think it would have altered the outcome but of course we will never know that and it is understandable that after a defeat their manager and fans are probably going to try and use that decision to deflect a little away from the fact we were so domainant.

Tough to pick a man of the match in this one as I dont really think anyone had a particularly bad game. Gayle did what he does and scored 2 good goals - I particularly enjoyed the first one even though it was a 1 yard tap in after Greens error. Good strikers should sniff out and anticipate those kind of chances and I dont think we have had a striker that does that for a while. It used to frustrate me massively seeing the likes of Cisse bang in a goal from 30 yards but not always be alert around the 6 yard box to get those kind of tap ins.

At the back I though Anita was excellent offering good options going forward and getting a great assist for the 2nd goal which was a great team goal.

I also thought Colback had probably the best game I have seen him have for a while mopping up nicely alongside Shelvey in the midfield.

It said a lot for our dominance really the fact that Ritchie and Gouffran who have been 2 of our best players so far this season going forward didnt really get into the game that much.

So another good win and it wouldnt be right to review this game without mentioning the touching tribute from both sets of fans for Gary Speed in the 11th minute. I cant believe it is 5 years this week since football lost a great man and it was nice to see the fans unite for a brief moment to pay their respects.

It is Blackburn at home next which will be a game that people will no doubt have down as a banker on current form but we have to make sure we dont get complacent, that is quite clearly the only thing that will derail our promotion ambitions this season.
