EFL Cup Quarter Final Preview: Hull City Away 16/17

Magpies Looking To Dodge Past Tigers And Book Semi Final Spot

Tonight sees Newcastle travel to Premier League strugglers Hull in the EFL cup quarter finals looking to progress to the last 4 of a competition for the first time in what seems like an eternity after so many years of not taking the cup competitions seriously.

That said I think we did go too much the other way against Blackburn on Saturday and ended up surrendering 3 points because we had more than an eye on this one.

The manager denied that but as I said in my review of Saturday I think he was clearly telling porkies but that has gone now and the one thing we have to make sure of now is that we dont end up losing both of these games.

If we win tonight and get to the semi finals then I think most people will be fairly happy with sacrificing those 3 points on Saturday but we lose tonight too then obviously we look a touch stupid.

One thing that Saturday has shown us is that you cant be complacent. Despite Hull being in the Premier League they are obviously struggling and with us doing so well prior to Saturday then I think a lot of people are getting a bit carried away and assuming this is somehow going to be a walk in the park for us.

They may be struggling of late but Hull showed in the first few weeks of the season when they were crippled with injuries a fighting spirit and some quality that got them some vital points on the board.

They will be looking to use tonight to hopefully get a victory that might act as a springboard to getting some better results in the league so I have no doubts that they will likely name a strong side tonight and I dont think there is any chance that they will see this as a competition they are better off out of to then focus on the league.

Dont get me wrong I believe we have the quality to win this one despite them being a Premier League side but only if we apply ourselfs like we have for the majority of the season and dont stroll up expecting a walk in the park.

I fully expect to see the likes of Lascelles, Gouffran and Gayle back in the starting lineup and with Jesus Gamez injured at the weekend then regular left back Paul Dummett is almost certain to come back in and I wouldnt be surprised to maybe see Anita come in for Yedlin too with us reverting back to what is probably our most solid back 4.

I think Diame may also get the nod especially with this being against his former club - not for sentiment as such, I think his pace and power might help us in this one generally anyway but the fact he also may have an extra point to prove might be a very small reason to also give him the nod.

I know we have a game on Friday night but I just hope we go at this tonight full tilt with as strong a team as possible.

It has been so refreshing to actually progress in a competition for once and it would be a massive disappointment to miss out on the semi finals especially when we have got a pretty decent draw compared to some of the other teams we could have got.
